BEIJING, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of China (CPC) on Wednesday held a seminar with African political parties to explore the mission and role of parties in building a China-Africa community of shared future.

Song Tao, director of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, addressed the opening of the seminar, which was held ahead of upcoming CPC in Dialogue with World Political Parties High-Level Meeting in Beijing.

Song briefed the attendees on the 19th CPC National Congress, including the concept of building a community of shared future.

In the process of exploring paths toward modernization, China and Africa should share ideas, draw on each other's strengths and support each other's undertakings, Song said.

Acknowledging that political parties exert great influence in the development of countries and their engagement with other countries, Song said that the CPC is willing to maintain close relations with African political parties.

Over 60 representatives of political parties from some 20 African countries attended the seminar.

Evariste Ndayishimiye, secretary general of CNDD-FDD of Burundi, said his country hope to learn from Chinese experiences, especially in promoting comprehensive development and people's welfare.

Solomon Lechesa Tsenoli, Central Committee member of the South African Communist Party and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of South Africa, said his party is curious about the CPC experiences in capacity-building and how to run programs.

In his keynote speech, Song also called for more mutual trust and learning, as well as practical and win-win cooperation, as the Chinese and African economies are highly complementary to each other.

He also recommended strengthened security cooperation and coordination on international affairs to contribute insights and solutions on global economic governance, sustainable development and the reform of international institutions.

"Together, we shall give a voice to the developing world and be the constructors of world peace, contributors to global development and guardians of international order," said Song.

On the same day, Song met with Samdech Techo Hun Sen, president of the Cambodian People's Party and Cambodian prime minister, and held talks with Abdulrahman Omari Kinana, secretary general of Chama Cha Mapinduzi of Tanzania, both in China to attend the high-level meeting.

Earlier on Tuesday, Song met with a delegation headed by Demeke Mekonnen, deputy prime minister of Ethiopia and vice chairman of the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front, who is also attending the seminar and the upcoming high-level meeting.

TIKRIT, Iraq, March 16 (Xinhua) -- A top Iraqi army officer said on Monday that Iraqi troops need U.S.-led coalition air support to recapture the city of Tikrit, after two weeks of a major offensive stalled against Islamic State (IS) militants.

"The Iraqi security forces need coalition assistance to complete the liberation of Tikrit as the IS militant group planted thousands of bombs to defend their last redoubt in Tikrit," said Lt. Gen. Abdul-Wahab al-Saadi, head of the Operations Command of Salahudin province.

Al-Saadi, whose command is responsible for the security in the province, said a request had been made to the Defense Ministry to demand intervention of coalition air support.

"The U.S.-led coalition have advanced equipment to locate the targets accurately and have advanced technology and sophisticated weapons that can reduce by far the time and casualties of clearing the city," he said.

The campaign to recapture Tikrit has been stalled due to the presence of IS booby traps and the Iraqi security forces' intention to limit casualties.

"The reason behind the stall of the operations to free Tikrit is that the leaders do not want their units to sustain heavy casualties, and they prefer to prolong the siege of the city to force the IS militants either to surrender of be killed," a federal police colonel said.

"Hundreds of improvised explosive devices had been planted at the entrances to the city and the main streets, important buildings," the officer told Xinhua on condition of anonymity. "Even residential houses were booby-trapped."

Some 30,000 Iraqi troops and thousands of allied Shiite and Sunni militias have been involved in the two-week operation to recapture Tikrit and other key towns and villages in the northern part of Salahudin province from IS militants.

However, they have been moving slowly and cautiously amid sporadic clashes with the militants, including a large number of IS snipers, while dealing with hundreds of roadside bombs and booby-trapped houses.

Much of Salahudin province has been under IS control since June 2014, after bloody clashes broke out between Iraqi security forces and the group.

BEIJING, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's GDP rose from 54 trillion to 80 trillion yuan (about 12.1 trillion U.S. dollars) over the past five years, Xi Jinping said Wednesday.

Xi made the remarks in a report to the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

"The economy has maintained a medium-high growth rate, making China a leader among the major economies," he said.

China has maintained its position as the world's second largest economy and contributed more than 30 percent of global economic growth, Xi said.

The rapid GDP growth is among the major economic achievements under the leadership of the CPC in the five years since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012.
